More information

Our motto is Equality - Quality - Accessibility - Sustainability.

We have set up the services at the Phoenix Medical Practice to meet the needs of our patients.  We take confidentiality very seriously.  Our office has disabled access, is family friendly, and we are able to assist with language and reading.

Speaking your language

We serve 1,000 or so patients we have that are not completely fluent in English. We are fortunate to have a Farsi speaking member of the clinical team, and we work closely with the PEI Association of Newcomers who provide translator services for our Mandarin, Cantonese, Bhutanese, Spanish, Korean, and Russian speaking patients.

We have many of our leaflets available for our patients in Farsi and Mandarin as well as in English, and we use google translate to produce leaflets 'on the fly' in many languages.

Disabled access

We have disabled parking spaces, easy access doors, and elevator access to our practice.  Our washrooms are all suitable for wheelchair users.

Family Friendly

We have a large children's play area, as well as having a paediatric room for our younger patients.  Our washrooms have baby changing facilities.   If you require assistance with looking after younger children while you are visiting us, please let one of our team know.

Confidentiality

We take your privacy very seriously. Only clinic employees have access to identifiable data, and then only on a 'need to know' basis. You have the right to access the data we hold on you and to request copies of that data (a reasonable fee may apply).

Except for sharing information with other health professionals involved in your care, we will always obtain your written consent before releasing any identifiable data to a third party.

We may share anonymous data without profit for health planning purposes. If you don't want your data used in this way, then let us know.

Chaperones

For your peace of mind, a chaperone will always be present for opposite sex examinations.

If you feel you would like a chaperone to be present during an examination, please speak to the doctor or nurse and a chaperone will be made available to you.

Rudeness, intolerance, aggression

We understand that patients are sometimes frightened and upset about their health.  However, we have a multi-cultural practice with team members and patients from all over the world.  We do not tolerate rudeness, racism, intolerant, bullying or aggressive bahaviour.   This includes passive aggressive behaviour.    Such behaviour upsets our staff, and research shows that being exposed to or witnessing such behaviour increases error rates in health care.  This is a serious Health and Safety issue affecting all patients and staff.  Anyone behaving in such a manner will be asked to leave and may be removed from the practice patient list without warning.  If they require urgent care they will be referred to a place of safety such as the emergency department.

Paperless

We are a 'paperless' office - our medical records and appointment systems are fully computerized. We use the OSCAR Electronic Medical Record - an open source system created by the department of family medicine at McMaster University, Ontario.

MyOSCAR

MyOscar is a secure, private, on-line patient health record that works with our clinical system.
When it is up and running (planned for 2011) you will be able to:
- send us secure emails
- view copies of your results
- manage your prescriptions
- Make or cancel appointments (coming soon)

If you are interested in MyOSCAR then call us on 894-7369 to arrange an appointment.

Quality Care

We use the Quality of Outcomes Framework (QoF) points system to measure the quality of the care that we provide to our patients.

This gives a score out of 1000 possible points, with points being scored for providing evidence based care across a range of chronic diseases and preventions. Also, points are scored for good quality clinic management and easy access to care for patients.

The first step in measuring quality is to set up registers of patients with chronic problems. Without registers you cannot measure how much illness you are seeing or how good the quality of care is that you provide for patients with those problems.

We have the following disease registers (this table shows the prevalence of each disease in our practice):

The 2008/9 scores are as follows:

Strachur 998.5 out of 1,000

Sherwood 172.0 out of 1,000

Mission Statement

Our practice ethos is laid out in our mission statement.  You can download a copy here.

Strachur Medical Practice

Strachur Medical Practice
Our medical practice is one of a pair of medical practices that we run.

The other practice is an NHS Medical Practice in Argyll, Scotland. You can visit the Strachur Medical Practice website here.

The two practices are run identically as far as is possible - good medicine is the same everywhere.

The only differences are those that are necessary to meet the different needs of the two patient populations, and the different funding structures and legal considerations in Canada and Scotland.

The Phoenix Medical Practice is much larger while the Strachur Medical Practice is more remote and has its own dispensary (pharmacy) which is part of the practice.
